Sobre Biónica

In the class "Design for Extreme Affordability," my team partnered with Fundación Biónica in Costa Rica to streamline the development of affordable 3D-printed prostheses for upper limb amputees. After extensive interviews and prototyping, we created Sobre-Biónica, an at-home measurement kit that eliminates the in-person measurement appointment for 80% of people. By innovating measurement methods, like using a rubber band to denote arm creases, we improved measurement accuracy by 50% and ultimately reduced the need for an in-person visit for measurements, which can be costly for many families. Overall, this was an amazing experience that taught me how important building relationships are when understanding user needs, and that sometimes the most simple solutions are the most effective.
